Florida’s Gulf Coast is famous for its calm waters, abundant marine life, and incredible scalloping opportunities. Every summer, boaters flock to shallow bays and estuaries for one of the Gulf’s most exciting and family-friendly boating adventures: bay scalloping season.
Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned scalloper, knowing the rules, prime locations, and techniques will make your trip safer and more rewarding.

Scalloping Gear Essentials
To make the most of your scalloping adventure, bring:
- Mask, snorkel, and fins – Clear waters make spotting scallops easy
- Scallop bag or mesh bag – To keep your catch safe and compliant
- Gloves – Protect your hands when picking up scallops
- Cooler with ice – Keep your scallops fresh for cooking
Optional but helpful: a depth finder to locate shallow beds and a buoy marker to anchor safely.
Top Tips for a Successful Scalloping Trip
- Go Early or Late – Midday sun can be intense; early morning or evening trips are more comfortable.
- Follow the Rules – Florida law limits the number of scallops per person and the size of shells.
- Respect the Environment – Avoid damaging seagrass beds and marine life.
- Check Tides – Low tide exposes more scallops, making them easier to collect.
- Bring Friends & Family – Scalloping is a fun group activity, especially for kids.
